Kids can play through the adventure and progress as they master skills or set practice mode to play specific games and practice certain skills. Children learn about short vowel sounds in Sam's closet. Kids pick shirts to pack that have the same short vowel sounds. With one click students can hear the vowel sounds pronounced and see what the notation looks like. Sam also says words out loud so even beginners can find the right words. In Reader Rabbit's basement kids learn about word families and find words from the same family. Kids climb a stack of books to reach the top as they find the right words. Students learn about beginning blends when they catch falling nuts in the jungle. Nuts complete words and then words are stacked in families strengthening understanding of word families. Under the sea kids help to decorate crabs by building words. Kids combine beginning sounds, consonant blends and vowels to make words. Each letter or blend is spoken when chosen so kids can hear each different part of the word and then the word as a whole. This is a fantastic phonics activity. Young students also work on vowel combinations, long vowel sounds, "r" controlled vowels, compound words, syllables, prefixes & suffixes and contractions. In addition, there are 18 storybooks for kids to read-along, color and practice. Kids can record themselves reading the stories with a microphone and play back. Parents can track progress with a comprehensive report that shows number correct and attempted on any activities.
